Floating shelves look simple. Getting them to sit dead level, stay solid and line up with everything else in the room is where the craft comes in. Critical Cuts builds solid wood floating shelves to the exact size of your wall and installs them ourselves, across Edmonton and the surrounding area.

Made to Measure, Not Off the Shelf

Store-bought floating shelves come in a few set lengths and depths. Ours are cut to fit your wall, your alcove or the space beside your fireplace, with the depth and thickness chosen for what they'll hold. No awkward gaps and no shelf that's almost the right size.

Measured in Your Home, Built Off Site

We come to your home to measure the wall, then build and finish your shelves off site. When they're ready we come back to install them, so you get fewer visits and minimal foot traffic in your home.

Solid Wood, Finished to Suit Your Room

We build with solid wood like Douglas fir and black walnut, milled, sanded and stained or oiled to suit your space. Adding beams or a mantel too? Your shelves can be made from the same wood and finish so the whole wall ties together.

    Installed Properly, by Us

The hidden hardware is what makes a floating shelf float, and it's where most DIY shelves go wrong. Every shelf we build is mounted on concealed hardware anchored into the wall, set level and checked before we leave, so all you see is clean wood.

    Floating Shelf Questions

Yes. Every floating shelf Critical Cuts builds is made to order for your wall. Length, depth, thickness, wood species and finish are all set to suit the space, then we install them ourselves.

It depends on how many shelves you want, their length and thickness, the wood you choose and the wall they're going on. Every project is quoted on its own and quotes are free. Call Clayton at 780-619-4503 or send a few photos and rough measurements through the contact form.

A DIY kit or a store-bought shelf costs less up front. What you get from a finish carpenter is a shelf cut to your exact space, a finish that matches your room and an install that's solid, level and anchored properly, which is the hardest part to get right with floating shelves.

No. Google Trends shows Alberta search interest in floating shelves over the past year running above its five-year average. Solid wood shelves pair especially well with beams, mantels and feature walls, which is why they show up in so many of our projects.

We build and install floating shelves across Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Beaumont and Fort Saskatchewan, and take on larger projects across Alberta.
